Isabel Gordo

Main scientific area of research:
Evolutionary Biology and Population Genetics.

Present position:
Principal Investigator at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Evolutionary Biology Group, Estudos Avançados

Academic degrees:
PhD, Biology - Population Genetics, University of Edinburgh , UK, 2001.
Degree in Physics, Instituto Superior Técnico , Lisboa, Portugal, 1997.

Research interests:
In general, the area of research that I am interested is Evolutionary Biology.
I am interested in combining both theoretical and empirical work with the aim at understanding the major forces that shape variation in natural populations. I am using E. coli as a model organism to test theoretical predictions about the evolution of mutation rates and the genetics of adaptation. Other topics of current work are: evolution of antibiotic resistance and antigenic diversity in pathogens, and chromosomal speciation.

Research Projects:
As Principal Investigator:

“Adaptation within ecosystems”, ERC grant 2010-2015.

“Epistasis and antibiotic resistance”, 2011-2014 financed by FCT.

“Diversity and molecular evolution of pathogen populations” (PTDC/BIA-BDE/65276/2006) financed by FCT.

“Rates of mutations in the protozoa Tetrahymena thermophila” (PTDC/BIA-BDE/73163/2006) financed by FCT.

"Population Genetics of Adaptation in E. coli". Project started in July 2003 and financed by FCT/FEDER (POCTI/BSE/46856/2002).

As Colaborator:

Epidemiology and Evolution of Infecious Diseases: Influenza A and Malaria. Project started in June 2003 and financed for three years by FCT (POCTI/MAT/47510/2002).

The role of the social interaction in bacterial diversity and evolution. Started in January 2005, financed by FCT (POCTI/BIA-BDE/55758/2004)
