I am currently doing my second postdoc at the Evolutionary Biology group at IGC under the supervision of Isabel Gordo. I graduated in Biotechnology Engineering in 2002 at the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias (ULHT) in Lisbon. After an internship at Pfizer Research & Development (San Diego), I went on and got my PhD on Biochemistry at the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB, Oeiras) where I focused on structure-function studies on the catalytic copper centers of a multicopper oxidase. Afterwards, I did my first postdoc at Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry (Munich) where I studied the evolutionary effect of folding- and assembly-chaperones on the evolution of the photosynthetic enzyme RuBisCO by applying directed evolution techniques.

Research Interests

Presently, I am interested on the level of epistasis between beneficial mutations in E. coli when interacting with macrophages. I am working on both the intracellular adaptation of E. coli to macrophages and on the effects of antibiotic resistance in this system. I am hoping that my background on biochemistry will bring new insights into the topic and the goal is to complement my approach with the approaches already existing in the lab to understand how we can decrease the frequency of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the context of infections.
